What Do I Need to Know For Rehearsal?
What to Bring
For All Rehearsals
- MUSIC - this may seem obvious, but we've all done "that thing."
- Marching music must be in clear plastic sheet protectors in a 3 ring binder.
- Marching sheet music to be found here.
- PENCIL - the most important tool in a musician’s arsenal. Music is constantly being tweaked and modified. It is imperative you bring a pencil to mark in these changes.
- COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE – The excellence you strive for in rehearsal will be the excellence you achieve in performance.
- Sticks/Mallets
- Snares: Sticks TBA
- Tenors: Sticks TBA

Attendance
This is a performance-based activity. Consistent attendance at rehearsals is crucial to our success as an ensemble.
Attendance for Marching Band and Northern Thunder Ensembles
School Related Conflicts
It is expected that students who choose to participate in several activities or classes that have an “after-school” practice/performance component will make every effort to completely fulfill their obligation to each group. In many cases, splitting time equally between the two simultaneous activities is the best compromise.
Attendance for Marching Band and Northern Thunder Ensembles
- Attendance at all rehearsals is expected starting at beginning of school year.
- Attendance at summer rehearsals (for marching band) is highly encouraged if you’re in town and have no obligations.
- If you are to be absent, you must notify Mr. Krueger for drumline, or Ms. Jackson for Front Ensemble
- If you are absent, you may be asked to submit a video assignment. A staff member will communicate details to you.
- Attendance problems for any reason in both rehearsals and performances may result in part reassignment or performance suspension.

In many cases, splitting time equally between the two simultaneous activities is the best compromise.
- Performances/games take precedence over practice/rehearsal
- Performance/game conflicts should be resolved with full understanding and cooperation of all involved including complete and open communication between the students, teachers, parents, and coaches.
- Given good communication and enough advanced notification, conflicting events can usually be resolved to both party’s satisfaction.
Equipment Expectations
- All instruments are to be treated with the finest care. Treat them as if you were borrowing your friend’s prized $5000 guitar.
- Instruments should be covered at the end of the school day, following 6th hour band. When uncovered, instrument covers should never be on the floor.
- Nothing should ever be placed on top of percussion instruments.
- Instruments should be set up properly or stored properly, nothing in-between.
- Mallets must be returned to the mallet box after each rehearsal. The mallet boxes will be stored in a specific location.
- Do not allow others outside the section to play on your instruments.
- Drumline only: drumline instruments should be covered at all times except at approved performances.
Rehearsal and Storage Areas
- Rehearsal spaces and storage areas are to remain clear and clean at all times. Following a rehearsal, areas must return to “school day ready” fashion.
- The drumline cabinets must be closed after every use.
- Please only store your drum, sticks, and current drumline music/drill materials in the drumline cabinets. They are not a personal storage container.
Video Assignments
On occasion, marching ensembles will ask members to submit video assignments for individual assessment. These assignments are an easy way for the staff to give individual feedback to students and develop the individual musician. Details will be communicated by staff members on the season expectations regarding video assignments. It is expected that videos will be submitted given proper and timely notification.
Care for the Group
There are many parts of this activity that go way beyond playing. Far more important is how well you work with the group, how well you interact with others from different backgrounds, different ability levels, different ages, and different experience levels. We are all in this together and you have to take care of each other no matter what. Being able to get along with each other not only helps the ensemble play together, but also creates an environment where your performance is genuine and real. Play together and play for each other. Part of your experience includes becoming part of the group and your ability to bring others into the group.
Every day in rehearsal is an audition and everyone has been auditioning from the first day.
